Twelve-millimetre iron rod is one of the most commonly used reinforcement sizes for residential building in Nigeria, used in columns, beams, and slabs on virtually every serious construction site from Port Harcourt to Kano. Because it is sold in fixed 12-metre lengths, "per length" is the natural unit for comparing prices, rather than by weight or by tonne, which is more common for bulk industrial orders.

Steel prices in Nigeria are unusually sensitive to global commodity markets, since the billets used to roll iron rod are heavily influenced by international steel and scrap prices, along with the exchange rate used to import them. This means iron rod prices can move noticeably within a single month, even when nothing has changed locally -- a naira devaluation or a jump in global steel prices shows up here faster than in most other building materials.

Buying directly from a rolling mill or a large steel depot, rather than a small retail hardware shop, usually gets you a better price, especially if you are buying a bundle (typically around 12 lengths) rather than single pieces. Site location also matters: rod prices at a depot in Lagos or Onitsha, both major steel distribution hubs, tend to run lower than in smaller towns further from these hubs.

Because this material is a large share of any building budget, we track it closely. The range you see here reflects actual prices reported by buyers and reviewed before publishing -- always get a fresh quote from your supplier before finalising a large order, since steel prices can shift quickly.

How this is calculated. The range and average come from prices people reported, reviewed before they count. Reports within 10% of the current range apply immediately; anything further outside is checked by hand first.
