Current price range for a standard 30-piece crate of chicken eggs.
A crate of eggs, typically containing 30 pieces, is a staple grocery item bought weekly by households and small food businesses across Nigeria. Unlike imported staples, egg prices are driven mostly by local factors: the cost of poultry feed (a large share of which is imported maize and soybean meal), transport from farm to market, and seasonal demand shifts.
Feed cost is the single biggest driver of egg prices over time. When maize or soybean prices rise, whether from poor harvests or higher input costs for farmers, egg prices tend to follow within a month or two as farmers adjust to cover their costs. This makes eggs a useful, fast-moving indicator of food inflation more broadly.
Prices also vary by crate size -- some sellers offer slightly smaller or larger crates -- and by egg size, with larger eggs typically commanding a small premium. Buying directly from a farm or a large poultry distributor is usually cheaper than buying from a small retail shop or market stall, where a modest markup covers the seller's transport and storage costs.
Demand tends to rise around festive periods, particularly December, which can push prices up temporarily. We track real, reported prices rather than official rates, since egg pricing can vary meaningfully even between neighbouring markets in the same city. If you buy in bulk regularly, comparing a few sources before committing is worth the extra few minutes.
How this is calculated. The range and average come from prices people reported, reviewed before they count. Reports within 10% of the current range apply immediately; anything further outside is checked by hand first.
