Hiring a Plumber or AC Technician: What to Know Before You Call
16 Aug 2026
Hiring a plumber or an AC repair technician for the first time can feel like a bit of a gamble, especially without a fixed price list to compare against. A few simple habits can make the process far less stressful and help you avoid paying for more than you actually need.
Start by describing the problem as precisely as you can before requesting a quote. "My tap is leaking" and "my tap has been dripping constantly for three days and the pipe underneath looks slightly rusted" lead to very different conversations, and the more detail you provide upfront, the more accurate the initial quote is likely to be. Photos help enormously here, especially for issues that are hard to describe in words, like unusual staining, visible corrosion, or the specific type of fitting involved.
It also helps to understand roughly what category your job falls into before the technician arrives. A routine AC service (cleaning filters, checking gas levels) is a fundamentally different job from a compressor repair, and a simple tap replacement is different from a full re-plumb. Asking upfront which category your issue likely falls into can help you sanity-check the quote you receive against the scope of work being described.
Do not be afraid to ask what is included in a quoted price. Does it cover parts, or just labour? Is there a callout fee separate from the repair cost? Will you be charged differently if the technician discovers a more complex underlying issue once they start working? Getting clarity on these questions before work begins avoids awkward conversations partway through a job.
Finally, for any non-emergency repair, it rarely hurts to compare a couple of quotes if you have the time, particularly for larger jobs like a full bathroom re-plumb or a compressor replacement. For urgent issues, like an active leak or a completely non-functional AC in extreme heat, prioritising a fast response over comparison shopping is usually the right call.
